Ind. Courts - Vigo County Courthouse has new security system

WTHI-TV, Terre Haute reports, in a story by Kelly Gillespie:

Thousands of people walk through the doors of the Vigo County courthouse. The vast majority are strangers.

"Probably the majority of people that walk through will not work here, so again majority of people who come in here are visitors to our court," said Sheriff Jon Marvel, Vigo County Sheriff.

"Anyone who walks in here..if somebody comes in with a knife or weapon, they're coming in for a reason. It's to hurt or kill someone," said Sheriff Marvel.

In Vigo County the courthouse has relied on the memory of officers. Now technology will help out in the form of a brand new security system.

With the new equipment a warning will actually sound if you have on anything inappropriate, and the computer system will also take your picture.

When someone with a weapon enters the Vigo County courthouse, a warning will sound, and an image will immediately be saved of who entered. * * *

The new courtroom security equipment cost around $50,000 and was purchased through a federal grant. The Vigo County Emergency Management Agency also helped the county get that grant.
